I always build out in the open, and haven't had too many issues so far. Some guidelines I follow: I design on a grid. I allocate 7×7 tiles per cell with 3 tiles of space between each cell. 7x7 means that there is a center tile in each cell. Leaving 3 tiles of space is an effective firebreak to stop fire from sweeping through the whole colony.This saves an *enormous* amount of hauling time.
